Promotion of Tribal Culture

The Minister for Culture and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation Kumari Selja has said that Government of India has not formulated any specific action plan for the conservation and development of culture of the tribals living in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today she said, Government has, however, taken various steps to preserve and promote the art, culture, folk dances and languages of various tribal communities across the country. Ministry of Tribal Affairs also supports State Governments having Tribal Research Institutes in their efforts to preserve and promote tribal culture and languages. Similarly, they also organize Tribal Festivals at national/regional levels under their scheme of ‘Organization of Tribal Festivals’.

Kumari Selja said, financial assistance of Rs. 1.30 crore, Rs. 1.65 crore and Rs. 0.31 crore has been provided to Tribal Research Institutes of Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhatisgarh respectively, during the last 3 years by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. That Ministry has also provided financial assistance amounting to Rs. 0.13 crore and Rs. 0.075 crore to the State Governments of Chhatisgarh and Odisha respectively, during the last 3 years, under the Scheme of ‘Organisation of Tribal Festivals’.

She said, the Zonal Cultural Centres under the Ministry of Culture have also incurred expenditure amounting to Rs. 1.24 crore, Rs 0.368 crore and Rs. 1.24 crore, during the last 3 years, for the purpose of conducting programmes in the States of Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha respectively.
