The Conference of Chief Ministers, State Forests & Tribal Development Ministers concluded here today with the consensus that various programmes meant for the welfare of tribals must be converged for maximum benefit to the Scheduled Tribes. It was decided that an effort would be made to dovetail all developmental programmes to ensure that benefits do not get frittered away.
It may be recalled that the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, in his inaugural address yesterday, emphasized to dovetail all development and welfare programmes in tribal areas. This, he said, was imperative to ensure that our strategy is coherent and there is a coordinated approach involving all departments of the Government. He especially mentioned education and health in this regard and said that it was equally important to pay adequate attention to improvement of agricultural productivity in tribal areas.
Keeping this in view, the conference on its second day, shared experiences of States in the area of focused and converged planning. The States which made presentations on their programmes included Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Amongst the Union Ministries, the Ministry of Rural Development, Environment and Forests and Panchayati Raj shared their insights into how to dovetail their programmes for benefiting the ST population.
