There are 5 tribes in Andaman & Nicobar Islands namely Great Andamanese, Onge, Sentinelese, Shom Pen, Jarawa whose populations are less than 500. They may be considered to be facing the threat of extinction.

There is, however, no declining trend in the population of any tribe in the State of Orissa. There are thirteen PTGs in Orissa .
A Central Sector Scheme for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PTGs) covers 75 identified PTGs among Scheduled Tribes. The scheme is extremely flexible because it enables every State to focus on areas that they consider is relevant to their PTGs and their Socio-cultural environment including identities and culture. Funds are being made available to States as per the provisions of the scheme.
